Museums to Boost their Revenue

Joel Bartsch has since 2004, guided Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) as the president and chief executive officer. Under his leadership, he transformed HMNS through engaging in capital expansion, facility renovation, and improved customer service. In addition, Joel Bartsch has helped to bring the museum back into profitability.

For museums to be profitable, they need to come up with creative ways of boosting their revenue streams. Even though museums are largely considered non-profits that depend on gifts, membership dues, admission fees, and grants among others, having extra revenue is an excellent way to help them achieve their mission. The following are some measures museums can take to increase their revenue.

Host Movie Nights

Museums that have screens in their auditoriums or outdoor spaces such as lawns with projectors can showcase films at their facilities. Films that attract a huge fan base or resonate with a museum are best placed to bring in good revenue streams through admission fees.

Lockers

Museums in large cities visited by many travelers can rent out lockers to visitors to securely store their personal items while on a tour of the museum. This is not only convenient for visitors but is a great way for museums to earn extra income, as they can charge visitors a small fee for storage.

Gift Shops

Museums can sell unique items and merchandize at their gift shops that reflect exhibits and designs available in the museum’s collection. For instance, bracelets inspired by Roman and ancient Greek artifacts and other unique collections are a great way to enhance a museum’s experience for guests, as well as acquire extra income. Also, when visitors buy take-home items, it reminds them of the museum visit.
