A resident of Houston, Texas, Joel A. Bartsch earned a bachelor’s degree in seminary studies from Rice University and a master’s degree in the history of science from Concordia University. Joel A. Bartsch serves as the president and CEO of the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS).
Founded in 1909, the HMNS exists to promote the understanding of natural science and is comprised of five floors of permanent exhibits including paleontology, Texas Wildlife, and Native American culture to name a few. The museum also features additional venues including a planetarium, giant screen theatre, and butterfly center. Education is a key initiative of the museum and is provided in-house and through the virtual outreach program.
The HMNS virtual outreach program consists of two presentation formats including pre-recorded and virtual, live sessions. Live presentations on scientific and cultural topics are delivered by experienced educators and are one hour long. Pre-recorded presentations are also delivered by enthusiastic museum staff educators and experts on a diverse range of topics including chemistry, arthropods, and ancient Egypt. Participants in the pre-recorded program have access to their chosen program selections for 24 hours and may also opt to schedule time with the curator or educator to ask questions over a Zoom call.
