Four Destinations in the Middle East Worth Visiting

The president and CEO of the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS), Joel A. Bartsch has been working in the museum field for over 30 years. Throughout his career, he has developed professional relationships around the world. Both professionally and personally, Joel Bartsch is particularly fond of visiting the Middle East.

Although people don’t often think of the Middle East when considering overseas travel destinations, the area offers tourists a huge range of activities and experiences. Below are some of the Middle East’s best destinations:

Jordan
One of the safest and friendliest countries in the Middle East, Jordan has plenty of attractions that draw in tourists. These nclude Petra, a unique city that was built into a mountainside, and the Dead Sea, which consists of very buoyant and salty water.

Tel Aviv, Israel
There are plenty of places worth seeing in Israel, but Tel Aviv is perhaps one of the best places for tourists. Not only is it the country’s second-largest city, it’s a modern urban center complete with a vibrant nightlife. At the same time, it provides a healthy dose of history dating back to the beginning of civilization.

Dubai, UAE
For the perfect balance between modernism and culture, tourists should explore Dubai in the UAE. While visiting, individuals are free to enjoy plenty of classy restaurants and shopping malls interspersed with awe-inspiring deserts and attractive beaches.

Oman
Home to the Royal Opera house, the Wahiba Sands desert, and the Grand Mosque, Oman is one of the Middle East’s newer must-visit destinations. It consists of plenty of culturally rich cities, including Nizwa, set against a beautiful natural backdrop.

About Joel Bartsch

Since 2004, Joel A. Bartsch has led the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) as president and CEO. In this capacity, he coordinates and leads museum staff and curators in the creation and maintenance of immersive exhibits, implements renovation strategies, and promoting museum-wide leadership. Through these efforts and many others, Joel A. Bartsch has nearly doubled both the institution’s annual attendance and membership base. He also oversaw two major expansions at the museum that added more than 250,000 square feet of space.

Mr. Bartsch began gaining experience in museum leadership more than three decades ago, when he joined the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum as a curatorial assistant and assistant to the director. He held this role during his last years as a mining engineering student at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. From there, Mr. Bartsch took on staff roles at the Texas Memorial Museum and HMNS, curator of earth sciences at Lyman House Memorial Museum in Hawaii, and director and curator of the California State Mining & Mineral Museum.

Through these positions, Joel Bartsch gained extensive experience in everything from managing daily operations and directing fundraising efforts to writing corporate grant requests. He drew on this experience when he returned to HMNS as a curator, project manager, and director of earth sciences, the positions he held immediately prior to his current role as the president and CEO.
