Houston Museum of Natural Science

Joel A. Bartsch has served as the president and chief executive officer of the Houston Museum of Natural Science for nearly 20 years. As head of the museum, Joel Bartsch helps manage the museum’s growing membership while coordinating educational programs and supporting the creation of new exhibitions. In early 2021, the museum opened an exhibition of artifacts from the city of Pompeii.

About 2,000 years ago, Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried Pompeii in ash and debris. People had little warning that their life was coming to an end. The artifacts that have been recovered from this site tell us a lot about what life was like for Pompeii's residents. Surprisingly, it was not much different from ours: Pompeii had a thriving city center, graffiti, food stalls, and even examples of fine art.

Altogether, Pompeii: The Exhibition includes more than 150 artifacts ranging from fresco paintings to a bronze gladiator helmet. One of the highlights consists of eight body casts excavated from the site. Visitors also have access to a theater that sets the scene for the catastrophe and can subsequently participate in a 4-D simulation of the eruption.
