Joel A. Bartsch has been at the helm of the Houston Museum of Natural Science since 2004. Under Joel Bartsch’s leadership, the museum has completed expansion projects and capital campaigns that added more than 200,000 square feet of exhibition space.
The Houston Museum of Natural Science is expected to add Gaia, a three-dimensional rendition of Earth by artist Luke Jerram, to its permanent exhibits. The sculptor's work is meant to invoke the overview effect, a cognitive experience felt by astronauts viewing Earth from space.
Nearly a dozen astronauts have reported feeling an overwhelming sense of unity and awe when looking down on Earth for the first time. The intense emotional response is thought to arise from being physically removed from Earth.
The sensation was first called “the overview effect” in a book of the same name written by Frank White. Some astronauts have described the effect as contradictory because it strongly highlights both the beauty of Earth and the suffering of its inhabitants. Others have noted that from space, Earth seems small, fragile, and in need of protection.
